Following the Sunnah: Raising Children with the Mercy of the Prophet (PBUH)

Written by Hafiz Muhammad on September 5, 2022

There is no better guide to parenting than the Sunnah. One of the most priceless things parents can provide to their kids is a decent upbringing rooted in Prophetic wisdom. For parents, parenting can appear to be a challenging task that occasionally causes confusion, but looking at the life of the Prophet makes it clear. There are specific guidelines for Islamic parenting that parents can adhere to to make sure their children grow up to be God-fearing individuals who will be a benefit to the Ummah (community). Here are some of the crucial guidelines inspired by the Best of Creation:

The Ideal Role Models are Parents

The Prophet (PBUH) led by example, and so must you. Young children are still learning the distinction between good and wrong as well as appropriate behaviour in social situations. Parents have a duty to instil this knowledge in their children, and the greatest way to do so is by setting an excellent example. It is the obligation of parents to teach their children how to choose a healthy environment and the types of people who belong there. This will guarantee that the children do only good and pure deeds. Children should be encouraged to develop their inherent goodness and purity. The responsibility for raising and caring for children falls on the shoulders of the parents. Children can go in any direction if left alone, depending on the types of adults they encounter with. Parents should provide a positive example for their children by acting morally sound themselves and showing dedication to learn Quran online.

Children are Pure at Birth

The Prophet PBUH said, “No child is born outside of Al-Fitra...” confirming their innocence. This hadith of our beloved Prophet PBUH demonstrates that Allah created infants who were blameless, pure, and naturally inclined toward goodness as well as believers in one God. Islamic parenting practises call on parents to recognise that a child is good by nature. A child’s surroundings plays a role in how they act. Children behave in accordance with what they hear, see, and experience. If they experience a Quran teacher who is harsh, they may dislike the Quran; if they experience one who is kind, they will love it.

The Foundation of Upbringing is Kindness and Mercy

This is the core of Prophetic parenting. Our dear Prophet Mohammed PBUH used to be merciful and compassionate to everyone. When he was on his knees, he would let kids to clamber over him since he was the kindest to them. Today’s parents would be upset if their kids climbed on their backs while they were kneeling and praying. Prophet Mohammed ( ) did not stop them because he recognised that playing is part of a child’s inborn nature. Parents must realise that a child’s complete development depends on play, and that play promotes a child’s social, cognitive, and emotional growth. We ensure our online Quran classes reflect this mercy, allowing children to learn in a stress-free environment.

What is the Appropriate Line to Draw for Your Child?

Mercy does not mean lawlessness. Our dear Allah has set limits for us to follow. Without boundaries, society would be in a state of chaos. Children are no different. They require a set of rules that will serve as a behavioural guide and provide them the discretion to act and behave within them. Children will challenge their parents’ boundaries by testing what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour if they don’t comprehend what is and isn’t acceptable. Children will have instructions to act within their boundaries if they are taught in advance about good and appropriate behaviour, often learned through stories in online Quran reading classes.

Teaching Your Children About Responsibility

The Prophet (PBUH) entrusted youth with great tasks. It’s important to teach children about their obligations. The youngster will become more autonomous, dependable, and productive if they have responsibilities. This gives the kid a sense of belonging both in the home and in society. They will grow in their sense of community and learn how to contribute to their family and community. Additionally, they will learn to take responsibility for their acts. The Prophet of Allah PBUH stated, “Each of you is a guardian...” reminding us that we are accountable for their spiritual education, including their Hifz and Quranic understanding.
